History: DC Wikia on Jonathan Samuel Kent

Personality:

Jon is a curious, friendly ten year old boy who's developing an increasing taste for adventure, heroism, and a genuine desire to do good by others.

At first glance of initial character art, especially in costume, the first reaction most people would have is that as a character, he's going to be like Superman, except in a kid friendly and cute package. While Jon's father is Clark Kent, with all that implies, his mother is still Lois Lane, with all that implies.

While Jon's dad is the Big Blue Boy Scout, and his role model as a superhero, Jon still has a good way to go before he gets there, and he isn't entirely following the traditional Superman route.

In general, one of Jon's most apparent characteristics is that he is willingly and readily friendly and social, much more than either of his parents are. He quickly fits in and finds local friends in his initial version of history when the Kents moved to Hamilton, even before it's actively revamped to that being his childhood home, and his open and friendly demeanor is a source of agitation to Damian Wayne, who has a low opinion on socializing with people in general. This friendliness doesn't change, even after he's let in on the family secret and his own heritage, or after he becomes Superboy. While moral poise and the determination to do right might arguably be Superman's key trait, Superboy's is his willingness to be friendly, take care of others, and do right for them.

This isn't mean to imply that he's particularly smooth in any way, though; even for a ten year old boy, Jon has moments of being especially goofy or stumbling over his words, getting tongue tied when he first encounters the young girl his age who lives on the closest farm over, and clueless over what certain kinds of compliments might mean in certain contexts, such as girls to boys- or girls talking about boys.

Jon also shows a strong brave streak that grows over his initial tendency to be afraid; in Superman, he originally starts off afraid of Wonder Woman and Batman when they arrive to talk to Superman, afraid that they want his dad to hand him over because of his still developing powers. He repeatedly shows other moments of being afraid- such as getting spooked while watching scary movies and then being dragged out into the night to help Kathy find her grandfather- but is inwardly motivated by wanting to help and then outwardly by Kathy's urging to control his fear when they enter the local swamp.

He is shown multiple times to be strongly motivated by his family, even in cases where it might not be the best idea or safest choice for him to make. One of his earliest 'adventures' involves the Eradicator coming for the Kent family because of Jon's existence as a hybrid; even scared and out of his element, his first questions are “How are we gonna help Dad?” and threatening the Eradicator to get his dad back, and jumping into a fight he's not prepared for when Lois' safety is on the line. When Krypto is eaten by a monster pterosaur on Dinosaur Island, his default reaction is to divebomb the alien-dog eater in question to punch it and demand Krypto back, despite not being able to fly.

For good and ill, he's also still on the naive side, generally choosing to believe others, even when it may not be the best decision to make, and sometimes misses sarcasm entirely. Once he begins to trust and work with Damian, he usually ends up being the unwitting and unwilling sacrificial lamb to the older boy's superheroic plots, up to and including being dropped off the side of a high-rise to distract Lex Luthor.

Partially due to this optimism, he often shows a willingness to try talking first, but also gets easily frustrated whenever it doesn't work.

Jon is shown to be something of a daydreamer, and can get distracted from keeping on task for school- in Superman: Lois and Clark he gets in trouble for watching the news on his phone instead of paying attention to the lesson- and often get lost in the moment, especially when 'appointed' to a task he wasn't expecting to do.

As a result of all of this, he's still learning to separate black and white morality, and good versus evil; usually he has his dad alongside to help him unravel the trickier questions- largely why for them 'No Killing' is important, as is minimizing collateral damage- but it's still a work in progress, just like it is for most kids his age. He's still prone to minor acts of mischief, too; when left alone for a few hours, he's shown to be responsible enough to be left alone, but not responsible enough to not eat all the junk food and ice cream he can binge on before his parents return, and willingly gives back to Damian what Damian starts.

This comes to a hilt with the machinations of Manchester Black; he casts a wide net of manipulation over Hamilton, fully intent to get at Superman through Jon, with Black forcing his own world view- one that emphasizes those who have the power and willingness to act versus those who don't- onto Jon, by carefully managing a darkened version of a series of events that Jon gets exposed to, before escalating and taking the boy over. It's only broken when Lois shows up, not irrecoverably wounded like Black had originally shown Jon, proving everything had been a lie.

Jon's shown after this to take both a more measured approach towards the concepts of 'justice' and 'mercy', particularly where the living are involved, and loses some of the sheen of innocence and naivety, though Damian still often gets the drop on him and Jon proves to still be an optimist at heart- just one developing more tricks up his sleeve.

Canon Powers: Oh, god.

As a Human-Kryptonian hybrid, Jon has developed or has shown the capacity of developing the powers of a full Kryptonian, with Batman even speculating that based on Jon's DNA, he will probably eventually be stronger than his own father.

These include super hearing, supervision (telescopic, x-ray), flight, (currently limited) invulnerability, superhuman stamina (for a ten year old), superstrength, superagility and superspeed (currently somewhere around 'speeding bullet'), superbreath, and his favorite, heat vision.

He also has an extremely unstable solar flare power that appears later than this chosen canon point that can cause him to explode if exposed to too much emotional stress. It's not a great time.

Freebie Powers: Peak 'human'/hybrid vigor, as far as that matters for a kid.

Power Selection: Magic! Monk archetype.

Game Powers: Jon's magic is going to be light/holy-themed, and largely spells that can be used to assist.

Holy light- 'Passive' spell. A radiance that at 'full' power can act as a repellent against evil and undead. Tuned down, it basically gives him a low-power nightlight glow a few inches from his body. This is not an offensive spell and causes no damage.

At level one, it can wear him mentally and physically out after long periods of it on at full blast. It can extend twenty-one feet out, and evil and undead will actively move away from the light.

Level two, it can extend thirty feet out. It is less tiring to maintain for long periods of time.

Level three, it can extend thirty-eight feet out, is barely tiring to maintain for long periods of time.

Barrier- 'Defensive' spell. A solid barrier of light that can deflect attacks. It can be sized as a larger static barrier wall, or as a smaller mobile shield. Can operate as a 'drop' and go, but is mildly buffed if he focuses on the spell.

At level one, it can withstand several smaller attacks, or one big one before breaking. If Jon's focus is on holding the barrier, instead of allowing it to break or dissolve, it can withstand one more smaller attack, but it will knock him out for a few seconds.

At level two, at default, it can withstand longer flurries of smaller attacks, and one big one along with several smaller attacks. Jon is no longer at risk of getting knocked out if he's focusing on it when it breaks, but will be temporarily disoriented.

Level three, it can withstand a barrage of attacks, both small and large. Jon is no longer disoriented if it breaks.

Amber Waves- 'Offensive' spell. Golden holy light sprouts from beneath, taking on the shape of wheaten fields. Damages enemies only.

At level one, it sprouts in a wave roughly out from Jon, roughly 20-30 feet depending on how wide it can 'grow'. Those with ill will towards the party will experience slicing damage if they try to force their way through it. At this level and intensity, it can only be cast once before resting.

Level two, it can extend out to 40-50 feet out, again depending on width. At this level, Jon can cast it at the level one extent twice before needing rest.

Level three, it can extend 60-70 feet out. At this level, party members caught in the field can be mildly invigorated. Again, he can cast it at the lower levels instead of max level with more frequency.

Non-Powered Abilities: While not a genius by any means, Jon's naturally curious and has been exposed to Kryptonian technology, which he's shown to develop some familiarity with understanding and working with, showing that he picks up on and learns skills fairly readily. Living in the country on a farm for a good chunk of his childhood means that he'll be entering the game with some level of know-how where livestock and agriculture are concerned, and extremely basic survival skills from learning how to camp outside. Also, he's a ten year old kid, cute, knows it and has been shown to ham it up for appeal, which is a skill in and of itself that will at least work until he gets a bit older.

Setting/Suitability: Jon is going to be ecstatic about the whole fantasyland angle, as any ten year old who's fallen into the kind of plot that can be found in any favored children's series. Of course, he will quickly realize exactly how serious of a situation he's wound up and will do his best to be serious and useful when the time calls for it. Despite the dark forces at work in the setting, Jon has already dealt with many serious and dark scenarios in his very short tenure as Superboy, and has proven to be emotionally and mentally resilient, more than some teenagers and adults would be. While he doesn't have the full set of skills that might be needed yet for survival, Jon has a willingness to learn and proven thirst for adventure and heroism.

Overall, I want to see what kind of path this puts him on, considering that at ten, he's still at a crucial crossroads for life and different experiences can change what the end result is wildly. Also I want to save him from Bendis.

SAMPLES

Prose Sample:

For whatever reason, whether it's a strange nonhuman appearance, special powers or magic, having actual dental hygiene, or wearing a digital watch, the locals have declared your character a witch and want to burn them at the stake. Write your character reacting to the situation in whatever idiom is natural to them, whether it's with appealing to compassion, using logic, fighting their way out, terrifying them by playing death metal on their dying ipod, etc.

“A witch? Where?”

Jon isn't entirely sure how it happened, but at some point he must have gotten separated from the group and wandered off. And now it's a different part of the small town they were trying to buy supplies from and he doesn't exactly remember where he took that last turn, just that he should get back to everyone else, and quick. Especially if there are witches around. Because depending on what they're like around here, kids his age are sometimes on the menu.

And then it hits him that they're talking about him. His red and blue jacket with the bright red cape stands out against the dull beige, brown and off-white clothes the townspeople wear, not to get started on his sneakers and jeans which have holes on both knees. Compared to everyone else here, he sticks out like a big sore thumb, and not in a good way. He's a burst of color in a dirty town.

And did he just hear something about what they do to witches here? Uhoh.

“Uh, me? I'm not a witch! Eheh,” He laughs, nervously, and rubs the back of his head, trying to grin, despite the trouble he's found himself in. “I'm just travelling through! Everyone else I'm with are up ahead, we're just trying to find someplace to buy food and sleep for the night!” Which is true, and he has no reason to lie, even though some of the more canny members of the group are trying to find food and lodgings for cheaper than they might otherwise. After all, they want to try and keep the peace, don't they?

A lanky balding man with bad teeth leers down at him, and Jon tries to swallow his reaction as he backs away, not turning away from the gathering group which he's increasingly realizes doesn't look as friendly as they did on the main road coming in. A glance down the alleyway he's winding up in shows it isn't fully closed in, but a rickety old fence separates it from the other side. Movement on the other side, and a cluster of bright out of place colors make his eyes widen. “There they are, I'm going to be leaving now, bye!” And before the closest man can grab for him, Jon ducks his hand and bolts, soon scrambling up the fence. “Guys! Wait for me!”

Network Sample: 200 word minimum. You may use the following prompt, or make up your own. Links to RP samples at other games are not accepted, you must write up a new prompt, but you may use samples at other games to supplement your samples. Since the test drives rarely use network format, you cannot use a test drive thread for the network sample, only the prose sample.

Your character's inner child has been separated from your character into its own individual entity by a powerful spirit, and your character can speak to them through the game's magic mirror network. The child has been commanded to listen in silence, and in an ultimate test of self-awareness, your character has been told they must talk to them and pass them wisdom and emotional honesty they've gained through life experience. Every time you character lies or is otherwise insincere about something from their adult life, they get zapped with a painful magical shock from the spirit.

[It turns out 'inner child' probably wasn't really meant for someone his age, because while Damian might have delusions of grandeur, Jon knows that he's still very much a kid (partially on account of being reminded he is every chance the older boy gets).

Even so, there's a much younger Jonathan Samuel Kent visible through the mirror, kindergarten age, watching him with big blue eyes. It makes him feel awkwardly self-conscious, and Jon wriggles in his own seat before scratching the back of his head.]

Uh.

I'm only ten, I haven't really learned a lo- Ow!

[Jon's eyes widen in surprise and indignation, the 'inner child' still passively watching.] I'm not a grown-up, that's cheating! Ugh, this is like something Damian would do...

Um, anyways.

There's a big secret. I probably shouldn't tell you, but it's amazing. An' when Mom an' Dad decide you- me- ugh, why is this so complicated- get to learn it, it's going to change everything.

[Pause]

Except not really. Dad is still Dad, no matter what, and Mom is probably more awesome than we knew.

And us, too! Stuff can be scary, but it doesn't mean we have to let it stop us. And we'll make a bunch of friends who'll help. Like Kathy, and Maya, and even Damian. He softens up after awhile. Promise.

[In a soft whisper:] He really likes animals.

And uh, be careful with the junk food. It turns out some of 'em don't really mix all that great.

Additional info: As a note since it isn't touched on in there, the merging mentioned in the Superman Reborn portion linked in Jon's history happened in-universe, and characters within canon are aware that something happened, to different extents. In-universe, the exact specifics and details of the New Earth-Convergence timeline have faded from memory, but the fact that the 'reality fractures' existed and were remerged is still known. I'm bringing this up for the potential of it coming up in game due to the magical nature of some in-game mechanics.
